Reviews

General Thomas Picton.  Letter, three sides ALS, with address panel on fourth side, dated Lisbon, 9th February 1810.  Written to his London agent shortly after his arrival in Portugal when he was engaged as President of a General Court Marshal before proceeding to Wellington’s Headquarters in Lisbon. He comments upon the state of the forces, the reputation of Lisbon (smelly and dangerous for pedestrians) the difficulty in obtaining reliable servants and upon the activities of the French in Spain.  Picton had just recovered from illness after the Walcheren campaign and shortly afterwards was given command of the 3rd Division and fought at Bussaco, Torres Vedras, Fuentes de Onoro, Badajos and Vittoria.  He was knighted in 1813 and killed while leading his men at Waterloo. Original folds, postmark and traces of seal.  Rare.
