Reviews

Sabre d’Officier de Cavalerie Legere, c.1800-1802.  This excellent ‘A la Chasseur’ example is the An IX regulation with the small modifications adopted for the later An XI production (see Les Sabres, Lhoste and Resek, pp.306 illustr 555 & 556 and Aries 3e fascicule 1969).  It is 42 inches overall, the curved single fuller, 33 1/2 inches blade marked only by the lightest patina with minor darker patches near the point.  There are several very light contact points near the tip, a clear indication of some past action.  The top eight inches retain almost 100% of the original blue, decorated with gilt highlights of wreaths, floral devices and swags.  The gilt panel under the longet is engraved with the makers’ initials, IG.  The wire wrapped grip is complete and otherwise unmarked, tight and unmoving when sheathed; the steel scabbard itself has two brass ring mounts and a light mottled patina, with two or three slightly darker ‘point of contact’ marks.  Complete with original iron drag.
