67e Regiment Infantry Drapeau, 1812

Price:   $ 16,500.00
Reviews
This is the 1e Empire (2e Modele pattern) of the 1812 Drapeau of the 67e Infanterie de Ligne. It is 84 cm deep and 83 cm wide with slight variation in the panels width: red 26.5cm; white 24.5cm., and blue 32cm. (Regulation specified 80 x 80cm). The hand stitched gold thread fringe is present at the front, top and bottom edges, 6.5cm in length, and darkened by age and minor ‘thinning’ from usage. The flag has double (back to back) silk panels, apparently machine stitched at the joining edges, (we have received two expert views on this, one stating that such stitching accuracy can certainly to be seen in authenticated 1e Empire examples, the second view suggesting some form of mechanical assistance). It has stenciled inscription on front and rear, the front reading L’Empereur Napoleon au 67eme Regiment D’Infanterie de Ligne; the rear with the Battle Honours awarded before 1815, Hondschoot, Neu Wiicg, Wagram and Lutzen. The Regiment fought in Spain from 1807 – 1809, when it was recalled for the 1809 Danube campaign, Napoleon’s last truly victorious military enterprise. The battle Honour Wagram was awarded to the Regiment which then returned to Spain. In 1813 the 67eme fought in the Compagne d’Allemagne, at the Battles of Lutzen (awarded Battle Honour) and Bautzen; it later fought in WWI, earning further Battle Honours. The flag is mounted in a magnificent double sided custom gilt frame, ready for display; the original stenciled gold inscriptions/decoration is visible and readable. There is a small hole at the bottom right corner, approx 6 x 4 cm., damage probably caused during use; it was crudely repaired and secured with hand stitching. The flag was made prior to 1815, or for the celebrations at the return of Napoleon’s body from St. Helena in 1840. It is one of the most evocative and intimate artifacts celebrating the reign of the great Emperor. Please call or email for details and price.
