Both the 63rd and 96th Regiments of Foot were highly distinguished before amalgamation as the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Manchester Regiment. The 63rd fought at Bunkers Hill and extensively in America during the Revolutionary War, in the West Indies and later in the Crimea. The 96th Regiment was formed in Manchester in 1824 and was stationed in Halifax, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India, most active in the Queen’s ‘Little Wars. Handsomely bound in dark green full morocco with raised spine bands, gilt panel devices and titles and date, 1923. The covers have gilt line and blind border decoration; the slipcase incorporates the original green decorated cloth binding. Exceptional. |
