The Battle of Wagram, July 5th and 6th, 1809 was the final conflict of Napoleon's 1809 campaign which resulted in the Treaty of Pressburg. It was one of his bloodiest battles, fought on the plains of Marchfield, 11 1/2 miles north east of Vienna and it was here that Bernadotte was disgraced, Macdonald won his Marshal's baton and Lasalle, the 'beau sabreur' of Napoleon's cavalry, finally met his Hussar's death. One of the finest paintings ever published as a limited edition.
In the painting, Napoleon and his staff oversee the field of battle which is delineated by smoke at the point of conflict and framed by the dramatic landscape.
