General Kleber, by Guerin. This beautiful oil on ivory portrait miniature of General Jean-Baptiste Kleber, is based on the famous painting of Kleber by the same artist, on display in Versailles. The miniature is signed by Guerin. Kleber, who was an architect in civilian life, accompanied Napoleon in Egypt. When Napoleon returned to France in the fall of 1798, Kleber was appointed General in Chief of the French Army of Egypt; sadly, he was assassinated several months later in early 1799 by an Arab. The frame itself, 5 3/4 x 4 ½ inches, is a work of art, scrimshaw carved and cut from ivory and bone. An exceptional miniature, c.1798 - 1800. |
