Large Military Panoramas |
|
| These prints (engravings and lithographs) of heroic scale and size are most suitable as a centrepiece in Office or Study. A Panorama is almost always a rarity as during the 19th century when these were published, they would have been issued in limited quantities. In the second half of the century, actions in South Africa, Egypt & Sudan, between 1879 and 1885 were well recorded by artists of the day. It was after the Suez Canal opened in 1869, that International attention focused upon Egypt because whoever controlled Egypt controlled the Canal. And it was vital to British interests in India and the East. The increase in foreign intervention in the following decade, principally by Britain and France, led to revolt and numerous military actions, today referred to as The Egyptian Campaigns of 1882 – 1889, involving both Egyptian and Sudanese rebel forces. Elsewhere, Great Britain’s expansionist policies led to war in South Africa, first with the Dutch Boers and also with the Zulu Nation. The woodcut engravings, several by R. Caton Woodville, are rare indeed and particularly suitable for display. |
