53rd Welsh Division, 1914-1918  $795.00

The History of the 53rd Welsh Division, 1914-1918.  Ward, Major C.H. Dudley.  1st Edition Cardiff 1927, 288pp., four folding maps, four others and eighteen plates, some ink and pencil marks to a few pages; original (rare) frail dust jacket laid in before rear end pages.  Major Ward, makes great use of contemporary diaries in recording the epic history of the division, which fought in Gallipoli, Egypt, the Sinai and Palestine, including the first and third battles of Gaza, the hill fighting north of Beersheba and the capture of Jerusalem.   On pp.128-37 there is scattered underlining in red pencil and small pencil notes at p.178, heavy ink marginalia to pp.180-90; two names underlined in ink on p.247 and scattered pencil ticks in the margins elsewhere.  Ink notes on pp.180-90 are very interesting and quote James W. Walker writing of his experiences during the campaign in Palestine, his meetings with Wavell and Allenby and his strategy for an engagement, which was accepted.  Notes on p.243 state that he commanded  the Division in 1918 and promoted to Major-General.  Bound in full red morocco with raised spine bands, panels with gilt lines, floral decorations, title and date, 1927.  Covers have a gilt line border with blind ball and link within and Italian marbled end papers, t.e.g. The slipcase has the original cover with gilt Welsh Dragon laid down.  Large quarto: rare and desirable.
